Health, safety & safeguarding
Small lessons that keep a household safe
Alongside our English and employment sessions, our 2025–26 learning programme weaves in a set of practical safety courses — the kind of everyday knowledge that’s easy to take for granted, and hard to access if no one has ever taught it to you.
What’s covered
Five courses, one aim
Each session is short, practical, and free to attend as part of our regular timetable.
Fire safety — the essentials of preventing a fire at home, and what to do in the first few minutes if one starts.
Health & safety — everyday hazard awareness, aimed at people who may be new to UK workplaces or renting for the first time.
Home safety — practical guidance on keeping a household safe, from appliances to general upkeep.
Safeguarding — how to recognise and report concerns for children and vulnerable adults, and where to turn for help.
Road safety, plus theory and practical driving practice — pedestrian and road awareness sessions, alongside support for those working towards a driving test.
Why it matters
Knowledge that doesn’t come with a manual
Many of the people who join these sessions are navigating a new country, a new home, or a new language all at once. Safety information that’s often assumed — how the fire brigade works here, what a smoke alarm sounds like, who to call about a safeguarding concern — isn’t always something anyone has had the chance to explain. These short, regular sessions are our way of closing that gap, taught by people the community already knows and trusts.
