Speaking up at a GP appointment. Reading a letter from school. Chatting to a neighbour at the bus stop. For many adults in our community, everyday English is the key that unlocks everything else — and our ESOL classes are where that key gets cut.
What is ESOL?
ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. Our classes help adults build confidence in reading, writing, listening and everyday conversation, at a pace that suits them. ESOL runs for eight hours every week at the centre.
Who can join?
- Complete beginners who are just starting out.
- Learners who understand a lot but feel nervous speaking.
- Parents who want to support their children’s schooling.
- Anyone preparing for work, training or further study.
Learning that fits around family life
Many of our learners are parents and carers. That is why we run childcare-friendly sessions, so mums and dads do not have to choose between looking after their children and improving their English.
More than grammar
Our classes focus on the English people actually need: booking appointments, talking to teachers, understanding bills, shopping and using public transport. Alongside ESOL, learners can join our weekly current-affairs and conversation sessions to practise speaking in a relaxed group.
“I came for the English class and stayed for everything else. The teachers are patient and I’ve finally got the confidence to speak at my GP appointments myself.” — Nasreen, ESOL learner
Part of a bigger learning programme
ESOL is one strand of our 2025–26 learning programme, which has welcomed 275 participants and delivered 416 training hours, including employment support, IT skills and safety training.
Want to join? Come to the centre at 52 Chesterton Road, B12 8HE (Monday to Saturday, 9:30am – 5:30pm) and ask at reception. Our multilingual team can explain everything in English, Urdu, Punjabi or Mirpuri.
